Although the causes of age-related macular degeneration are complex, many of the risk factors can be controlled.  Some of the risk factors that are under our control such as smoking, high blood pressure, being overweight altogether and also around the abdomen, and sun exposure without the use of eye protection.

Some of the risk factors that cannot be controlled are the following:

  • Age – the older you are, the higher the risk of developing AMD.
  • Genetics – you have a higher risk for developing AMD if you have a family history of macular degeneration.
  • Light-colored irises
  • Far-sightedness
  • High levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which is a marker of inflammation in the body.
  • Being female – females have a higher risk of developing AMD than males.
