Some of the risk factors that cannot be controlled are the following:
- Age – the older you are, the higher the risk of developing AMD.
- Genetics – you have a higher risk for developing AMD if you have a family history of macular degeneration.
- Light-colored irises
- Far-sightedness
- High levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which is a marker of inflammation in the body.
- Being female – females have a higher risk of developing AMD than males.
